“There is a ḥadīth condemning niqab”
There is a report calling the niqab moral corruption. Its chain runs through three unknown narrators, and its content is graded here not merely weak but fabricated.
Occasionally a report is produced that appears to settle the question in the opposite direction. This is the one usually cited.
The report
"Asfirī fa-inna al-isfāra min al-Islām wa-inna al-niqāba al-fujūr", rendered here as: O servant of God, uncover your face, for uncovering the face is part of Islam, and the niqab is moral corruption.
O servant of God, uncover your face, for uncovering the face is part of Islam, and the niqab is moral corruption.
It appears in Abū Nuʿaym al-Aṣbahānī's Maʿrifah al-Ṣaḥābah.
Why it does not stand
The chain. Three narrators — Saʿīd b. Ḥumayd, Quraybah bt. Manīʿah, and Manīʿah — are majhūl, unknown. A chain resting on unknown transmitters establishes nothing.
The text. The verdict on the wording goes further than "weak". It is munkar, objectionable, indeed fabricated.
That second finding matters independently. A weak chain means a report is unproven; a fabricated text means it should not circulate as evidence at all.
Attribution of the grading
This grading is not attributed to another scholar; it is argued directly here, on the chain and text evidence above, rather than resting on an established verdict.
What follows, and what does not
That this report fails does not establish that niqab is obligatory. It removes one argument from the other side — nothing more.
The position that stands is that the practice is legislated and commended, with the question of obligation left open.
