Must I uncover my face for exams, airports, court, or an ID photo?

Where identification genuinely requires it, yes — but only to the extent it requires. If the maḥjir, a fingerprint or a voice will do, more is not needed. Institutions are also asked here to provide female officers and a private room.

The framework here turns on necessity, and on how much necessity there actually is.

The principle

Examinations, airport screening and testimony in court can require the face to be shown. But if identification can already be made — by the maḥjir, by part of the face, by fingerprint, by voice, or by any other means — then further uncovering is not required.

The test is not whether the situation is official. It is whether uncovering is what actually achieves the identification.

Specific cases

Identity card, driving licence: treated as a ḥājah, a genuine need, which makes uncovering permissible.

Passport for ḥajj — can become obligatory, where the document is a condition of performing an obligation. The stated reasoning is that what an obligation depends on takes the obligation's ruling.

What institutions are asked to do

Not only of women. Institutions are asked for the same: female officers and a private room for identification checks.

That is worth stating on a page like this. The question is usually about what a woman must concede; this part of it is about what an institution should arrange.

A story worth closing on

In the court of Qāḍī Mūsā b. Isḥāq, a husband disputed owing his wife her dower. Witnesses were required to identify her, which would have meant her uncovering.

Rather than let that happen, the husband acknowledged the debt of five hundred dinars.

His wife then made him a gift of the whole sum.

The judge praised what had passed as nobility of character — which is why the story is kept, and why it belongs here rather than in a list of rulings.

Check your understanding

Under the principle the note sets out for situations like exams, airports, or court, when is a woman required to uncover her face?
