Women who stopped wearing it

A site that only carried accounts of women who kept the niqab would be advertising, not reference. These are accounts of leaving it. The pastoral note struck elsewhere on this site applies here more than anywhere.

This page exists because its absence would be dishonest.

A section called Voices that carried only women who wear niqab and are glad of it would not be a record of experience. It would be a selection made to support a conclusion.

Accounts

After the niqab: what life is like for French women who remove the veil — academic research published in The Conversation, following women through and after the decision.

Why I Took Off The Niqab After Two Years — a video account.

What the accounts show

The reasons vary and do not reduce to one narrative. Reported motivations include distance from a religious current the woman had been part of, the pressure of expectation attaching to the garment, and, in one account, a sense of having become dishonest by continuing without the conviction that started it.

Some describe hostility on announcing the decision, including accusations of apostasy.

A note that applies here

This site argues for the practice. It also asks that Muslims not condemn women who do not veil in particular circumstances — accusing them of being selective, inconsistent, or hypocritical, on the stated ground that such treatment drives women away from the practice rather than toward it.

That principle is not suspended for women who left it entirely. If anything it applies more.

This page's policy

No permanent copies — only links to the original. No added identifying detail. An author may ask for her link to be removed at any time.

That last point matters more on this page than on any other: someone may have written about stopping at one particular moment in her life, and may not want that piece of writing to become her permanent identity.

A personal account is not a ruling, in either direction. A woman explaining why she stopped is not evidence that the practice lacks basis, just as a woman explaining why she started is not evidence that it is obligatory.
